The word “chiropractic” comes from ancient Greek, meaning “done by hand.”  For many centuries, adjustment of the joints of the body has been used in the healing arts and now forms the heart of modern chiropractic care. Chiropractors are specialists in manual chadjustment of the vertebrae of the spine and other joints. Adjustment helps relieve pain and restore normal functioning to the spine, joints and supporting structures of the body, so one can enjoy his or her everyday activities again as quickly as possible. Chiropractors are also trained to prescribe therapeutic exercise, provide nutritional counseling  and recommend rehabilitation and injury prevention strategies.

When should one see a chiropractor?

For many, pain can keep them away from work, school or their day-to-day activities. When pain start causing interruptions and restrictions in the activities of daily life, one should consider seeking chiropractic treatment for wellness care. Others, like seniors, may find seeking chiropractic treatment helps them to maintain mobility and a good range of motion.

Pain should never become a way of life, especially when there is qualified help available. Even if one does not have painful symptoms, chiropractic care can help to maintain healthy spine and joint function.

There are various manual and instrument adjusting techniques available, and every patient’s problems are unique and different, chiropractors can customize appropriate treatments for each situation and comfort level of the patient.

There are many reasons to seek chiropractic care; injuries from work, accidents, sporting activites, and household chores. The commonly treated conditions are painful joint and spinal-related problems.

Chiropractic treatment for spinal problems

Spinal problems are commonly experienced by many people, and chiropractic care is a holistic solution one can turn to. Chiropractic focuses on the health of one’s nervous system by making sure the spinal alignment and musculo-skeletal system is balanced and functioning optimally. Using high velocity specialized manipulative techniques, a chiropractor can adjust misalignments in one’s spine, thus clearing any interference to the central nervous system. When the proper functioning is restored, the body’s innate ability to heal itself also improves.

Symptoms such as sharp and stabbing pain in the lower back, which leaves one with unbearable pain from the buttocks to the thighs, can be treated with chiropractic care. Major throbbing headache, tired and achy neck and shoulder, affecting concentration level can also be effectively treated with chiropractic care.

Is chiropractic adjustment safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest, non-invasive and natural therapies available for the treatment of headache, and neck and back pain. It has an excellent safety record. However, it is important to note that no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects.

Following an adjustment, most patients experience immediate relief. However, some may experience temporary pain, stiffness or slight swelling. There may also be a small group of patients who experience temporary dizziness, local numbness, or radiating pain. This is however not a cause of concern as adverse effects associated with spinal adjustment are typically minor and short-lived.
